Snap Shot Interlaken

Visit to Interlaken, Switzerland
26th to 28th July 2009

I use the tag 'Snap Shot' to describe these photo based posts and probably nowhere deserves the title more Switzerland. We began our trip in the town of Interlaken; a mecca for outdoor activities.
Not a bad view for the centre of town.Flowers were everywhere; both wild and cultivated.
On our first afternoon we cycled around the beautiful Lake Thun.
Giessbach Falls on the lake's north shore. It was time for adventure with a canyoning trip down the Grimsel Canyon. Things started with a decent abseil. Here we go! The journey down the canyon involved rappelling, sliding, jumping and swinging.
When the action calmed down the views were magnificent.
Probably the best way to appreciate the spectacular nature of the area is from the air; paragliding anyone?
Interlaken town with the Jungfrau dominating the horizon.
Yes this palce so spectacular it even has a rainbow.

I first visited Interlaken in 1965 and have been back several times since. Since my first visit it has (of course?) become more built up and commercialised ... progress of some sort, I suppose.

Switzerland is a rather nice country, I find (and your photographs also shew that). However, I wouldn't want to live there all the time: Hongkong is more vibrant and very much more interesting.

Best wishes, keep blogging.

Hey John

I find Switzerland a pretty enthralling place. I'm big into a rural/outdoor lifestyle and Switzerland offers so many attractions along those lines.

I had a ball in Interlaken and it's role as a hub of outdoor activities meant that we were able to do a lot of fun stuff pretty easily, though it is pretty obviously a tourist town and next time I'd love to visit somewhere a bit more 'real' or 'undiscovered'.

Photos from Grindelwald should be up tomorrow.

Cheers
