Henschke Mt Edelstone 1999
Eden Valley, South Australia, cork seal
Having finally arrived in Australia, Dad pulled this out of the 'cellar' for my first meal at home. Henschke is a top Australian producer and their Mt Edelstone Shiraz is made from 100% Shiraz, sourced from ninety year old vines in South Australia's Eden Valley
The wine's colour is still an impressive vibrant crimson. The nose has smoky, cedary smells, alongside side some dusty tobacco and hints of deep red plumes. The palate is intense and powerful with some sour black currents, liquorice, dark chocolate and thick, tarry prunes. It is superbly integrated and the refined tannins ooze class. My mate LB describes it as "graceful and balanced"; though I'm not sure if he is referring to himself stepping up to bat for Balnarring Cricket Club or the wine. A lovely, elegant wine, though for it's reputation and price point it's perhaps not as earth shattering as I would have expected.

I'm quite fond of of Mt Ed.
I have a few of these tucked away. Sounds like it should keep for a while.
I liked your review of the various airlines, especially as I may be heading to Hong Kong in November
Hi Edward
I'd agree with you about the Mt Ed, it seemed like it would definitely last a few more years; very well structured. I found it especially enjoyable as it was part of the only meal I had at home while I was back in Australia. Had a cracker of a holiday, just have to finish writing up all the posts!
Thanks for the comment
Andrew
The wine sounds great. I hope its aged as well as LB has. You should see LB unleash fury on the cricket field at Balnarring. I'll drink to that.
LB is only a spring chicken at thirty years, one month and twenty-three days. I have seen him unleash a little fury on the pitch; and yes I'm usually drinking while I'm watching!
Cheers
Andrew
